Northern Goldfields

The Northern Goldfields area covers the remote mining towns of Leonora, Laverton and Leinster, hundreds of kilometres north of Kalgoorlie. Suburbs in Northern Goldfields

Leonora is 237 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Goldfields Highway, with the deep Gwalia gold mine just to the south. Laverton is another 124 km east on the edge of the Great Victoria Desert, where the mostly unsealed Great Central Road heads 1,126 km to Yulara. Leinster, a mining town built in 1976, lies further north just off the Goldfields Highway. Summers are extremely hot, distances are huge and help can be hours away, so reliable wiring and good spares matter more here than almost anywhere.

Common auto electrical jobs in Northern Goldfields

Out here, vehicles must be dependable because the next town is a long way off. These are the jobs that matter most in the Northern Goldfields.

Mine fleets and 24V systems

Gold mines around Leonora and Laverton, and nickel and gold operations around Leinster, run large fleets of light vehicles, service trucks and buses. Many run 24V or mixed 12V and 24V systems with beacons, radios, isolators and work lights to meet site rules. Dust from haul roads and extreme heat attack every connection. Fused circuits for each accessory, sealed plugs and secure, protected looms keep vehicles passing pre-start checks.

Great Central Road and the Outback Way

Laverton is the western end of the Great Central Road, part of the Outback Way, and the first fuel stop heading east is about 300 km away. Corrugations and dust on the unsealed sections shake loose battery mounts, crack connectors and fill plugs with dust. Before setting out, check that batteries are clamped tight, fuses and relays are spare in the glovebox and the dual battery system is charging. See how a dual battery system works for more.

Extreme heat and batteries

Leinster has recorded 47.8°C, and summer days in the Northern Goldfields are regularly far above 40°C. Heat is the biggest killer of batteries, shortening their life and causing failures that seem sudden. Vehicles parked at mine sites all day suffer the most. Testing batteries regularly, choosing types rated for high temperatures and keeping terminals clean all help. Our guide on car battery types explained compares the options.
